Community Based One-to-One Mentoring
An eligible adult volunteer is matched one-to-one with a child in his or her community, based on similar interests, match preferences, etc. The volunteer and child spend 2-3 hours together each week for at least six months, sharing fun activities they both enjoy. The schedule is flexible to meet the needs of the volunteer and family. Matches are also encouraged to attend agency events throughout the year. Just a few hours a month can make a BIG impact on a child's life! Little Moments, BIG Magic!!
Site-Based Programs
Volunteers and children meet within a group setting, each week for 1-2 hours to hang out, read together, or enjoy fun games & creative activities. These programs run September-May, while school is in session. These programs include:
Buzz Club & Hornet Queens
This program meets Thursday evenings at Emporia State University. Eligible ESU student volunteers are matched with a child for at least one semester. The group enjoys dinner in the ESU Student Cafeteria, and engages in a fun and creative activity each week.
Sterling House After-School Program--Emporia
Children meet with residents of Sterling House Assisted Living Facility, each Tuesday from 3:30-5:00pm. The group shares snack time and a fun activity. Transportation is provided by BBBS staff.
Lunch Buddies--Emporia and Council Grove
The Lunch Buddies program matches children with an eligible volunteer for at least one semester. Matches meet for 45 minutes during the student lunch period, once a week. Bigs & Littles share lunch together, and may also read, work on homework, or just enjoy hanging out and talking!
Sister Sister After-School Program
Sister Sister is a "girls-only" program for students in 6th grade. This program meets weekly, in conjuction with the after school program, for fun and creative activities with Big Sister volunteers.
Outdoor Heritage
Little Brothers and Little Sisters are matched to volunteers with interests in conservation, fishing, hunting (with parental permission), and other outdoor activities. Similar to a one-to-one match, the volunteer and child spend 2-3 hours together each week.
School-Based Programs
Volunteers are matched with a child for at least one school year. the volunteer and child meet on school grounds each week for 1-4 hours. Matches share lunch together, read or work on homework, engage in fun & creative group activities, or just hang out & talk!

This recognized Student Organization at Emporia State provides a volunteer opportunity to be a part of BBBS without the regular time commitment. Plus, it is a great way to get community service or volunteer hours. BBBS always needs help with activities throughout the year!
